I recently saw both Wanted and Get Smart, two recently released movies out in theaters.
First of all, both were good movies in their respective genres, Action (Wanted) and Comedy (Get Smart). I'll start with Wanted. An action movie starring James McAvoy (The Last King of Scotland, Atonement), Angelina Jolie (Tomb Raider, Gone in 60 Seconds), and Morgan Freeman (Kiss the Girls, The Bucket List). It's about a guy, Wesley Gibson (McAvoy), who is stuck in a rut at a dead in job, and has nothing going for him. The movie revolves around a secret fraternity of assassins (ironically, titled The Fraternity) who convince Gibson that he is destined to be the world's greatest assassin after his father, whom he never knew and WAS the world's greatest assassin was killed in cold blood. The movie is non-stop action, fancy car driving, ridiculous stunts, ridiculous premises (firing a gun around a corner, curving a bullet, shooting the wings off a fly, a bullet hitting another bullet head on) but it was all great fun. From the opening scene where we have an assassin shoot off with a guy jumping off of the side of a building, pulling a gigantic revolver from his coat while in mid air and shooting 3 men and then falling into an adjacent building's windows...to the ending sequence where rats commit mass murder. This movie is truly a Summer Blockbuster filled with just about everything you can think of while not taking itself too seriously. It's definitely a must see as far as summer movies go.
4 stars out of 5- Definitely worth the $10 admission price.
Now we'll move on to "Get Smart" an James Bond-ish comedy about a wanna be secret agent who gets caught up in a terrorist plot against the likes of everything good in the world. It stars Steve Carrell (40 Year Old Virgin, Dan in Real Life) as Maxwell Smart/Agent 86, Anne Hathaway (The Princess Diaries, The Devil Wears Prada) as Agent 99, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson (Walking Tall, Doom) as Agent 23, and Alan Arkin (Little Miss Sunshine) as The Chief. It starts out with Maxwell Smart, who is analyst for CONTROL, a secret US organization who thwarts evil, not to be compared with the CIA. He has always had ambitions for becoming an agent himself but when he finally has a passing score on the Agent Exam he gets denied to become an agent. So after feeling down on himself he stumbles back into CONTROL headquarters only to find it in pieces from an attack...meanwhile, CONTROL lost agents in the attack on the headquarters so The Chief makes Smart in an agent...Agent 86 and teams him up with the sexy and competent Agent 99. They establish a bond with each other, some would even say a romantic bond, but both Hathaway and Carrell have an on screen connection that few could have in such a comedy.
Get Smart is Steve Carrell's best movie to date, it's also one of his funniest. He actually has to act in this movie as well as carry the funny moments, which really make the movie great. I'd call it the Comedy of the year. As well as a must see.
4.5 stars out of 5- Steve Carrell, Anne Hathaway in sexy clothes, Alan Arkin and The Rock...can't go wrong...Go See It!
