X-Files: I Want to Believe Review

Review by Peter Travers
Rolling Stone Magazine

Being suitably paranoid about the paranormal, I wanted to believe that X-Files creator Chris Carter, having had six years since the TV show went off the air to craft a humdinger of a plot, could conjure up something with more ding and less (ho) hum than The X-Files: I Want To Believe. What I believe, hell, what I know is that if I toss spoilers into this review, X-Philes will come to haunt me. So I'll say three things and no more.

1. David Duchovny is back as Fox Mulder and Gillian Anderson joins him as Dana Scully. That is the best news about this movie. No screen lovers have ever gotten more sizzle out of withholding. Forget carnality. Any Internet porn flick can show you penetration. Mulder and Scully get inside each other's heads. Now that's sexy. Duchovny, bless him, is also a master of deadpan wit. Let's not go into the activities room, he quips before visiting a pedophile priest.

2. If Seasons 1 to Season 6 of the TV show, represent the best of the series that ran from 1994 to 2002, then this second X-Files movie, following 1998's impenetrable The X-Files: Fight the Future, plays like an also-ran from Season 7 to Season 9. That's not good news. You may be excited that Mulder and Scully are back at the F.B.I, after being tossed for their beliefs. But the old spark is missing.

3. The true fans who love the show's mythology won¹t have much to chew on. Russian scientists with a thing for internal organs can't stand up against the complex network of government conspiracies on the TV series. The filmmakers insist this movie is a stand-alone, meaning you don't need to have watched a single episode of The X-Files to get it. Ha! Do the names Samantha, William and Skinner mean anything to do? If they don't ring a bell, expect a struggle. In not knowing who it needs to please, I Want to Believe pleases no one.

The Dark Knight...Best Ever?

We're talking MOVIE here not just COMIC BOOK MOVIE. It's a serious question that needs to be asked in order to validate or discount all the hype and hysteria that it has received in the seven days it's been out for public consumption.

Let's take a look at the factors that would put it into the top 5 category, all time of course. It's the top opening film ever after a five day release, with over $200 million by Tuesday. The damn thing hasn't even been out for a week yet and already it's the top opening movie of all time. This could be due to the droves of people that have already seen it more than twice or it could be because it's just that great of a movie. Either way, it's an amazing feat that tells me that it's a great movie that's not going anywhere anytime soon.

Another factor that would launch it into all time status would be the reviews and ratings it's been getting around the world, in the U.S. and on the internet. IMDB.com (a site that I recommend heavily) has it as their top movie on the Top 250 List, which is no easy accomplishment. The top spot was recently held forever and a day by The Godfather, well that was until the Dark Knight had a few days of mass appeal. This could also be due to the "Batman fanboys" who would want to launch TDK to the top of the charts by repeatedly voting for it, giving it 10 stars. But wait! IMDB.com says this can't be done and one account can only vote once per movie. So now we know that it's not just the same group of people voting over and over again. It's doing something right, wouldn't you say? I personally, have not seen a bad review written on the movie...but that might be because I'm trying to avoid the first one. LOL.

The Dark Knight had one of the biggest Viral campaigns ever for a movie. One that rivaled Cloverfield, and that's not done easily. TDK was made popular in different parts, one reason it was so heavily sought after as the next big thing to see was due to Heath Ledger's death earlier in the year. Yes, it was his last full role, and yes, people do want to see Heath's last performance on the big screen, and yes, he portrayed one of the best characters on screen EVER. But this is not the only reason TDK has achieved TOPS OF ALL TIME status. TDK has a cast that rivals that of the original Godfather movies. Bale, Oldman, Caine, Freeman, Ledger, Eckhart, Gyllenhal compared to Brando, Pacino, Duvall, Caan, Keaton...it's eerily similar. Now, before anyone has a hernia, don't get me wrong, I don't think Christian Bale is Marlon Brando nor do I think that Gary Oldman or Heath Ledger are Al Pacino...the star power and acting prowess is favorably similar. This is another factor why the movie is so good...it's got great actors and actresses behind it, those people know how to make and sell a movie. In the entire cast as a collective they have four Golden Globe wins and nominations...NINE Academy Award nominations and THREE Academy Award winners. That's some heavy artillery when you're talking about a comic book movie.

Only time will tell if this movie will stand up to the testaments of time but I think we'll still be talking about this one, years from now. It's that good. I just can't wait for the third installment.

Step Brothers Review!

Step Brothers Movie Review

By Prairie Miller

Bratty boy gross-out comedies may have been done to death, but Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly bring something new and different, and decidedly wacked out with Step Brothers, by adding hairy chests and whiskers into the suburban preteen angst mix. Tossing together perpetual coming of age issues with radically stunted mental maturity and weird slacker midlife crisis, this Adam McKay (Talladega Nights) directed nutty fare grabs attention through sheer ballsy kid impersonation by these overgrown instant sibling geeks and maladjusted mini-morons.

Ferrell is Brennan, a blissfully unemployed thirty-nine year old still living at home with his overly indulgent divorced mom, Nancy (Mary Steenburgen). When Nancy gets it on with Robert (Richard Jenkins), a widowed doctor she meets at a public lecture of his after she catches him checking out her anatomy, the two aging lonely lovebirds decide to get married. Robert also has a permanent live-in kid at home, fortyish Dale (John C. Reilly), and when newlywed Nancy moves in with Robert, the two brand new siblings are acutely distressed and anything but ready to engage in brotherly love, to say the least.

Mutual silent sulking soon turns into outright territorial warfare for these spoiled baby-men not used to sharing their parents, toys and secret stash of porn magazines, let alone the same childhood bedroom. While whining Brennan blames his maternal neediness on the perpetual post-traumatic stress of a grade school play in which he performed in drag and was accused of possessing a 'mangina,' spoiled rotten Dale has no patience for this intruder. Especially when Brennan does a get-even by wiping his private parts all over his super-hated stepbrother's beloved drum set.

There is a temporary time-out truce, when their parents read them the riot act and demand that the two lazies go out and find work, or else. And not ever having been particularly in tune with the real world, the two goofy guys show up in tuxedos to apply for jobs cleaning toilets. Then the plot decidedly sickens when Brennan is sent off to therapy and makes lewd advances towards his female shrink, while Dale gets raped and deflowered in a john by his horny sister-in-law, who also has a preference for relieving herself in male urinals, don't ask.

While Step Brothers, produced by Judd Apatow, who else, tends towards repetitious and over the top crude antics, there's enough inventive pretend kid malice to sustain the laughs for the duration. Think Superbad with ample doses of talking dirty sibling revelry.
